Austenwood Residential Nursing Home. Welcome ...
Austenwood Residential Nursing Home is an award winning private nursing home situated in leafy North Park; a beautiful and quiet residential area of the renowned Gerrards Cross, and yet within close proximity of the village centre. Austenwood consists of a former detached school and purpose built extension completed in 2015. There is a large courtyard with paved walkways where residents can walk or sit within easy sight of nurse carers and a beautiful ‘Capability Smith’ designed sensory garden to the rear.
Austenwood has been established for over 25 years and enjoys a wonderful reputation for providing the highest levels of nursing care to our residents in a safe and secure environment, for up to 35 elderly people. With a loyal and friendly staff base, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years, we provide a comfortable and homely environment for our residents with good food, regular activities and a home from home feel.
Our CQC Report
Our principles are to provide a safe and friendly environment for our residents without restricting their abilities or activities and to do all we can to make them feel at home. It is our mission to ensure that all who come under our care shall retain their independence, dignity and individuality and enjoy the highest standard of professional care and personalised service. We also consider it of great importance to enable each individual resident to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
Our primary aim is to create a home with nursing care for elderly people who can no longer manage in their own homes. We want our residents to live as they would wish to and in a way in which their individuality, independence and personal dignity is respected.
Austenwood Nursing Home is owned and operated by a local family, Peter and Kate Evans as Salveo Care Ltd. Kate’s background is in nursing and Peter’s is in public sector and business. Austenwood home for the elderly provides a relaxed and caring atmosphere and enables a fulfilling and meaningful life for its residents.
Our objective is to provide high quality individual care to our residents with dignity and understanding whilst promoting independence and autonomy, allowing them and their relatives peace of mind and security in the knowledge that this will be their home for as long as they wish.
We encourage our residents to go out and about in the community with family and friends, and to engage in those activities that they enjoy. Alternatively residents can invite friends and family into the home for a chat over a cup of tea or coffee, or to join in any of the many activities we have running.
Situated in one of Gerrards Cross premier residential roads, Austenwood presents a tranquil setting with a central courtyard and a large garden to the rear of the property. Easy access is afforded from the front of the property and there is plenty of parking for visitors. The premises consist of an Edwardian house, together with a purpose built wing with accommodation for 35 residents.
The home is made up of 33 bedrooms and suites. For the few bedrooms without en-suite facilities, each will have a vanity unit and specially designed disability bathrooms and toilets are near to each room.
Austenwood Nursing Home provides accommodation, meals, nursing and personal care, with professional registered nurses and experienced care assistants in constant attendance day and night. Whilst independence and dignity is always respected, a real sense of community has also developed in our home.
Our services are designed around the individual to offer care and support which is personalised for the person we are working with. Whilst we appreciate individual needs and circumstances may vary considerably - we are confident our wide range of support services will provide an opportunity for improvement in the quality and way of life for our residents.
Austenwood is well equipped with a variety of mobility and nursing aids to ensure we can meet the needs of our residents currently ranging in age between 60 to over 100 years. We can also accept persons over the age of 50 years with an identified nursing need.
We have wide corridors and there are lifts to all floors, which staff will assist residents to use if required. Residents have their own room and if they choose, are welcome to bring in their own personal belongings and other items to create a home from home atmosphere.
There is a large open lounge and it is here that the residents can relax and socialise with other residents and guests. The separate dining room has intimate dining tables where main meals are served. We also have a quiet lounge area for solitude or family events. There is a hair and treatment salon on the garden floor.
In fine weather, and wherever possible, residents are encouraged to make use of our beautiful gardens and sheltered courtyard.

We are lucky to have staff ably led by our very experienced Matron, Jeanette Gittens who has been the Home Manager since 2004. Having worked in nursing and the care sector for many years, Jeanette joined Austenwood Nursing Home in 2002 as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) with the Registered Managers Award and an N.V.Q. level 4 in Care Management. Both of these Awards comply with the Health and Social Care Act.
The care staff consists of trained nurses, senior carers and carers. All our nurses are experienced RGNs and undergo continual personal development Our Senior Carers have all completed their NVQ levels 2, 3 or equivalent and all other care staff have relevant care experience or are training for their care qualifications.
As well as regular supervision, they are all required to undertake regular training updates. We are delighted to have a wonderful activities co-ordinator who helps to improve our resident’s quality of life
In addition to our care staff, we are lucky to have highly experienced chef, catering, cleaning, laundry, maintenance and reception staff. All are trained in their roles and receive regular update training and just as importantly, they are all friendly and willing to go the extra mile to assist residents and relatives with their needs.
We have staff members whom have worked within the home for many years and bring great continuity and reassurance to our residents. For all our staff, we have a comprehensive induction system, as well as regular in-house training on all aspects of care.
The care is directed by the Matron and her Deputy, whom both are highly trained, qualified and experienced in this area and whose prime concern is the kindness and quality of care. Trained nurses are on duty 24 hours a day.
A local General Practitioner (GP) visits the home regularly and is happy to register new residents but as a matter of positive choice, residents may remain within the care of their current doctor.
Good food and a healthy balanced diet with plenty of variety are at the heart of our ethos, and in addition we can cater for special dietary requirements. All food is prepared in our kitchen using fresh ingredients by our experienced chefs. If residents would like something that is not on the menu, we will always try to accommodate them and we ensure fresh fruit is always available. The menu changes on a regular basis to ensure variety.
Main meals are generally taken in the dining room, but may be served in a resident’s room if requested. In addition, tea, coffee and soft drinks are served throughout the day in the lounge or their rooms. Relatives are welcome to dine with residents by prior arrangement.
At Austenwood we take time getting to know our residents. We help people settle in through finding out a little about their past experiences and talking to them about what they might enjoy and be interested in now. Every individual will have a different perspective of what adds value, meaning and purpose to their life. We aim to support the ‘quality of life’ of our residents including their emotional health and wellbeing.
All our dedicated staff assists in making the basic activities of daily living a pleasurable experience. A varied programme of activities, with new ideas all the time, based on our current residents own interests, is provided by our Activities co-ordinator. In addition, bedside visits, small group and one to one activities also take place.
Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to spend at least part of the day away from their bedrooms in our communal areas. Many activities take place in the lounge so that everyone can feel included – if they want to, through participation, or just being able to enjoy watching and listening. Care staff and visitors often join in as well.
Singing, music, arts & crafts, quizzes, seated exercises, reminiscence, spiritual groups, interesting speakers, entertainers and much more is available. We regularly provide theme parties for friends and relatives to join in and also welcome them to our outings ranging from visits to garden centres, boat trips and attendance at Royal Ascot. This stimulation encourages our residents to feel a sense of achievement, fulfilment and belonging.
